KELS - Kids Empowered Learning Sport Program

Year 9 student Kelsey Drabsch has created a Kids Empowered Learning Sport program to engage students at Gordon Primary School, Charles Conder Primary School and Lanyon High School in social sport. She independently won a grant from Youth InterACT in order to fund the program and many students have so far benefitted from the program, which was designed to build self-esteem and social participation. A fantastic effort from Kelsey!
LitLinks - Writing Competition
Congratulations to Joshua Finzi in year 10 who was runner up in the prestigious Litlinks Writing Competition. Joshua was awarded $250 for his story, Chrome Love and Absolution.
The judge commented: “Somewhere between Nick Cave and Edgar Allen Poe, this piece of compelling, stream of consciousness writing takes the reader on an unnerving journey into fantasy, mythology, and fable. A highly literary text, with references to Lovecraft, the Bible, Greek and Roman Mythology and the poetry of W.B. Yeats, the writer has woven a number of strands together into a compelling, gothic narrative. A very accomplished and challenging piece of writing, for both writer and reader.”
Litlinks is run by the ACT Association for the Teaching of English and sponsored by Paperchain bookstore in Manuka. It is open to all ACT government and private schools so to be runner up is a significant achievement. Davina Savangsaengouthay, Emily Kane and Allison Rattanong were also recognised for their writing and with Joshua are now published authors in the Litlinks anthology.
StormFX “Get Animated!” 3D Computer Animation Competition
Philip Vels (Year 9) won first prize in the Get Animated! Competition for his representation of the famous chess match “Kasparov vs The World”. Justin Johnston (Year 9) won a second place prize for his model of a team of jet fighter aircraft. Well done boys!
2010 National Runner Up – Dorothea McKellar Poetry Competition
Well done to Emily Kane for her brilliant submission I hear music (1631KB) and resulting achievement!
The judge commented: "A fresh, appealing poem, nicely structured. Many entries in this competition spoke of the love for one’s iPod; many were about the music of nature. This one combines both these themes, and more, in a poem that flows naturally, with wry humour. The depiction of the battle of wills, and its resolution, between mother and daughter is done superbly, with few words, and with affection. This poem has a warmth that can’t help being transmitted to the reader - it’s pure pleasure."
2010 ACT State Finalist – Google Cartoon Caption Competition
A huge congratulations to Bradley May for his wonderful representation of a political cartoon. His submission earned him first place in the ACT and a trip to Sydney to compete for the national prize. Lanyon High School was lucky enough to receive a Mimio Teach Bar thanks to Bradley’s excellent work.
