English
In English, language and literacy development is fostered through the areas of speaking, listening, reading, viewing and writing. Student understanding and skills in the English language are developed by learning how language is structured and used for different purposes and effects. The creation, study and enjoyment of literary texts are central to the English Curriculum at Lanyon High School. Students are encouraged to read widely through the wide reading program. Visual and oral texts are also studied and students are provided with opportunities to enrich their understanding and appreciation of English through supplementary activities such as theatre visits, drama performances, a variety of competitions and excursions to various settings.
English is compulsory in Years 7- 10. In Years 7 and 8, students study English and SOSE as an integrated subject. In Years 9 and 10, students are grouped according to their ability.
All English programs include:
- cooperative reading
- study of poetry and poetic devices
- literary studies
- writing in different text types
- working cooperatively
- oral presentations, informal and formal
- critical analysis of a wide variety of texts
In Years 9 and 10, students can elect to extend their English skills throught the electives offered.
